The region is an economic hotspot and the signs continue to point toward growth. Its logistical center is one of the most efficient freight transport centers in Germany. We are talking about GVZ Augsburg. Centrally located between Stuttgart and Munich, it acts as a heavily frequented hub for national and international freight traffic in the economic area of Augsburg/Bavarian Swabia.
DB Schenker is one of the logistics companies that has played a significant role in the development of GVZ Augsburg since its opening ten years ago. The latest commitment is the opening of a state-of-the-art logistics warehouse with a total storage area of 38,000 m2 in the fall of 2019. The international automation group KUKA and the omnichannel dealer MediaShop Group will be in charge of the contract logistics. Including this warehouse, DB Schenker has 78,000 square meters of well-equipped space for contract logistics in the GVZ Augsburg. The Augsburg region has a total of 7 logistics locations with a total of 140,000 square meters and a workforce of 700 employees.
Logistics as a factor of success
The GVZ forms a strategically important location factor for the entire region and the production and trading companies based there. The neighboring cities of Augsburg, Gersthofen and Neusäß are promoting the development of this freight traffic center in a correspondingly dynamic and cooperative manner.

The most recent highlight is the 38,000 m2 of DB Schenker logistics space for KUKA and MediaShop, which was fully occupied this year. The building meets the highest sustainability standards. 12,000 square meters of photovoltaic system produce enough electricity to supply 300 single-family homes. Such a successful investment justifies a celebration. Celebrities from politics, the administrative and logistics managers of the two customers KUKA and MediaShop, as well as high-ranking representatives of DB Schenker met at GVZ Augsburg on October 8th for a festive event including three discussion forums on GVZ and contract logistics.

Production logistics and omnichannel fulfillment in contract logistics
Characteristic of DB Schenker’s logistics activities at GVZ Augsburg are large contract logistics projects with a high level of service. A good example is the cooperation with FESCO, a subsidiary of the renowned leather goods manufacturer Fossil. And with the robot manufacturer KUKA and the new customer MediaShop Group, the activities that are overseen in the new logistics hall are also marked by strong partnership-based business models.
In the ongoing production operation, DB Schenker has completed for KUKA the consolidation of the sales and production warehouse into a central warehouse for the D-A-CH region. Added to this is the integration of goods receipt processing from the neighboring KUKA factory into the central warehouse, including a shuttle concept.
The entrepreneurial importance of this tailor-made logistics solution was expressed by Klaus König, CEO of KUKA Robotics at a discussion forum on the occasion of the location opening: “The new Augsburg central warehouse is gaining strategic importance as a hub in the supply chain. Good transport connections, modern warehouse technology and DB Schenker as a global partner enable KUKA to reliably receive goods and provide optimal warehousing and dispatch. “
Also for the new customer MediaShop Group, different warehouse locations have been combined to form a central warehouse for the D-A-CH region. There, DB Schenker looks after incoming goods, goods issue, transports, returns and customs clearance. And that for both the retail trade for end customers from the sales channels teleshopping and e-commerce as well as for the wholesale business.
