With its area check, DB Schenker offers its customers the opportunity to access free spaces at one of their sites when supply chains are disrupted. Globally and in Germany many customers are happy to take up this offer. Especially topical is the storage of medical protection equipment like disinfectant or protective masks. It presents challenges for everyone in medical care.
“The area check has become an important tool for enquiries at short notice. At short notice we were able to send round adverts announcing that we had free space”, says Maximilian Eichhorn from Business Development at Schenker Deutschland. “We’re delighted we could fall back on this tool at this time.”

A Response to Disrupted Supply Chains
With its area check DB Schenker has reacted to disruptions in the supply chain brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. The disruptions differ from market to market and product to product. Many companies are sitting on larger inventories. Textile and sporting goods manufacturers partly store surplus goods from sea freight before distribution. Also, in food and consumer goods the demand for short-term space is growing. Other companies, for example, in the auto industry are reducing volumes because demand has dropped.
Identification of Free Spaces
Due to daily changes in demand various storage areas big and small are available throughout the country. DB Schenker can identify available spaces with a special performance tool and offer them to their customers who are looking for additional storage capacity. “We can convert space that is normally used by customers to absorb market fluctuations, into temporary storage facilities and so support companies that urgently need extra capacity”, explains Eichhorn.

Data Updated Daily from More than 700 Locations Worldwide
The performance tool contains data updated daily from more than 700 locations worldwide. The roughly 100 contract logistics centres and a little under 25 land transport locations with contract logistics operations from Germany record their capacity in a common database. To be able to react quickly and flexibly Schenker Deutschland’s branch offices and central headquarters work closely together. “Currently a special focus of ours is on some of our locations in southern Germany and in the region around Hanover. We basically offer our customers opportunities throughout Germany”, says Eichhorn.
Free Spaces in the Near Future
That’s how DB Schenker differentiates between current and upcoming free spaces in Germany: this lets the logistics company better monitor capacity and better manage demand for free spaces in the near future. “With demand for free spaces, we get in touch not only with many existing customers, but also with many potential customers. This is obviously very good”, says Eichhorn. The pandemic and its repercussions will occupy business for some time yet.
